C.R.ガイスト著 市場における公正価格-歴史
Geisst, Charles R., Just Price in the Markets: A History. 280 pp. 2023:10 (Yale U. Pr., US) <701-271>
ISBN 978-0-300-26833-1 hard ¥6,968.- (税込) US$ 35.00

A concise history of "just price," from Aristotle to the present day The question of what constitutes a fair price has been at the center of market interactions since the time of Aristotle. Should a seller sell to the highest bidder, or is there some other standard, such as a morally defined price, to be applied? Charles R. Geisst traces the ways that philosophers, religious leaders, and economists have sought to answer that question, from antiquity through the modern era. Aristotle's thinking on usury influenced the idea of pricing well into the Renaissance. In his view, money was barren and should not be used to beget more money. As trade became more extensive, the strictures placed on pricing by Aristotelian thinking began to fall away, replaced by Roman and common-law conceptions of value and interest. Geisst's book follows the evolution of that thought-influenced along the way by figures such as Copernicus, Fibonacci, Adam Smith, Marx, Cassel, and Keynes-and charts parallel developments in European and Islamic notions of fair pricing. Today, pricing is seen as an economic inevitability, dictated by the laws of supply and demand. But this has not always been the case. As Geisst argues, the idea of a just price was once a moral concept, long before it was an economic one.

Perez-Garcia, Manuel (ed.), Great Trade Walls in Imperial China and Spain: Global goods, power struggles and bankruptcy, 1644-1840. 108 pp. 2023:9 (Routledge, UK) <701-274>
ISBN 978-1-03-245993-6 hard ¥32,747.- (税込) GB£ 130.00

This book offers a comparative and polycentric approach to the formation of global trade networks and goods that circumnavigated China, America, and Europe in the so-called process of "early globalization" during the early modern period.Based on a pioneering archival strategy developed by GECEM Project (Global Encounters between China and Europe www.gecem.eu) and funded by the European Research Council (ERC), the chapters in this volume deploy innovative methodology built on the process of clustering new empirical evidence on geostrategic locations to analyse complex socioeconomic systems. Each chapter in this volume focuses on a specific case study that validate the usefulness of this methodology for a more accurate analysis of the self-regulating institutions, social networks, circulation of global goods and information, and smuggling activities that characterised the nonlinear markets of early modern China, Europe, and the Americas. These studies constitute a clear example of the new directions of global (economic) history and how a bottom-up approach through new data mining and comparative method helps to unveil big research questions. The designing of GECEM Project Database (www.gecemdatabase.eu) stands out as cutting-edge Digital Humanities tool used in this book. This book is an insightful resource for scholars of Global History and Atlantic studies, including those interested in China's trade and history, and its global encounters with the West. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal, Atlantic Studies: Global Currents.

アフリカにおける国際法と資源採掘の歴史-資本蓄積と低開発 1450~1918年
Amin, George Forji, International Law and the History of Resource Extraction in Africa: Capital Accumulation and Underdevelopment, 1450-1918. (Routledge Studies in African Development) 296 pp. 2023:9 (Routledge, UK) <701-269>
ISBN 978-1-03-220890-9 hard ¥32,747.- (税込) GB£ 130.00

This book investigates the historical economic and legal regimes that legitimated the resource extraction and exploitation of Africa between the 15th and 19th centuries and led to the continent's trajectory of underdevelopment in the world system. The book interrogates the economic and legal structures that supported European intervention in Africa. It explores the trade and private property rights which were to shape the economic future of the continent, most notably the trade in human beings as legitimate private property by European powers. The book then looks at the techniques used to submerge African sovereignty under European sovereignty during the scramble for territorial control in the 19th century, concluding with the validation of occupation in international law following the 1884-85 Berlin Conference. The book argues that the doctrines of trade and property rights sanctioned by international law led to a trend of African dispossession that set the continent on a path to underdevelopment, with long-reaching consequences. This book will be of interest to researchers and students across law, history, economics, international relations, and African studies.

Arnold, Gina / Dougan, John et al. (eds.), The Life, Death, and Afterlife of the Record Store: A Global History. 296 pp. 2023:7 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <701-270>

ISBN 978-1-5013-8451-6 paper ¥5,538.- (税込) GB£ 21.99

Once conduits to new music, frequently bypassing the corporate music industry in ways now done more easily via the Internet, record stores championed the most local of economic enterprises, allowing social mobility to well up from them in unexpected ways. Record stores speak volumes about our relationship to shopping, capitalism, and art. This book takes a comprehensive look at what individual record stores meant to individual people, but also what they meant to communities, to musical genres, and to society in general. What was their role in shaping social practices, aesthetic tastes, and even, loosely put, ideologies? From women-owned and independent record stores, to Reggae record shops in London, to Rough Trade in Paris, this book takes on a global and interdisciplinary approach to evaluating record stores. It collects stories and memories, and facts about a variety of local stores that not only re-centers the record store as a marketplace of ideas, but also explore and celebrate a neglected personal history of many lives.

Badowska, Katarzyna / Cieslak, T. / Pietrych, K. (eds.), City of Modernity. Lodz. (Studien zur Multikulturalitaet 6) 624 S. 2023:4 (O. Harrassowitz, GW) <700-634>
ISBN 978-3-447-12026-5 hard ¥27,362.- (税込) EUR 125.00

City of Modernity consists of 33 essays about ?od?, a city that started out as an agricultural settlement and became a metropolis within a single generation, all thanks to technological progress. Its population of 767 in 1820, it had grown to 767,000 by 1939. At the turn of the century, it emblematized modernization and industrialization, and was a symbol of industrial-era modernity. It was often compared to Manchester and its truly American pace of development was admired. The city’s rapid economic career was impressive, but it also exacted a high social cost. The authors, representing a variety of fields (history, sociology, literary, theatre and film studies, cultural anthropology) analyze many aspects of ?od?’s economic, social and cultural life before the outbreak of World War II. In reference to ?od? modernism, they explore notions like modernity, metropolitanism and peripherality, multi-culturalism and multi-ethnicity (?od? was a labor destination for German settlers, Polish peasants, Jews, as well as newcomers from the Russian interior), the phenomenon of workers’ movements which peaked during the revolution of 1905, and the expansion of mass entertainment. The publication also looks at issues linked to urban infrastructure, animators of cultural life, and the emergence of new religious, political, and emancipation movements.

イタリア経済の盛衰
Bastasin, Carlo / Toniolo, Gianni, The Rise and Fall of the Italian Economy. (New Approaches to Economic and Social History) 211 pp. 2023:10 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <700-635>

ISBN 978-1-00-923531-0 paper ¥4,530.- (税込) GB£ 17.99

Carlo Bastasin and Gianni Toniolo provide a much-needed, up-to-date economic history of Italy from unification in 1861 to the present day. They show how, thirty years after unification, Italy began a long phase of convergence with more advanced economies so that by the late twentieth century Italy's per capita income reached the levels of Germany, France and the UK. From the mid-1990s, however, the Italian economy declined first in relative and then absolute terms. The authors describe the intertwined financial and institutional crises that eroded trust in the political system and in the economy at the exact juncture when new technologies and markets transformed the global economy. Longstanding problems of uneven levels of education and obsolete bureaucratic and judicial practices deepened the division between economically vibrant regions and the rest, causing polarization, political instability and rising public debt. Italy's contemporary malaise makes the country a test-case for understanding the implications of protracted declines in productivity and the flattening of GDP growth for the stability of western democracies, resulting in populism, mistrust and political instability.

Blanke, Louise / Cromwell, Jennifer (eds.), Monastic Economies in Late Antique Egypt and Palestine. 400 pp. 2023:4 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <700-636>
ISBN 978-1-00-927897-3 hard ¥25,190.- (税込) GB£ 100.00

This book situates discussions of Christian monasticism in Egypt and Palestine within the socio-economic world of the long Late Antiquity, from the golden age of monasticism into and well beyond the Arab conquest (fifth to tenth century). Its thirteen chapters present new research into the rich corpus of textual sources and archaeological remains and move beyond traditional studies that have treated monastic communities as religious entities in physical seclusion from society. The volume brings together scholars working across traditional boundaries of subject and geography and explores a diverse range of topics from the production of food and wine to networks of scribes, patronage, and monastic visitation. As such, it paints a vivid picture of busy monastic lives dependent on and led in tandem with the non-monastic world.

Burgin, James M., Studies in Hittite Economic Administration: A New Edition of the Hittite Palace-Temple Administrative Corpus and Research on Allied Texts Found at Hattusa. Volume I: Background, Corpus Overview, Case Studies, Lexical Commentary, and Glossary. (Studien zu den Bogazkoey-Texten 70) 666 S. 2022:11 (O. Harrassowitz, GW) <700-638>
ISBN 978-3-447-11929-0 hard ¥26,268.- (税込) EUR 120.00

The Hittite Palace-Temple Administrative Corpus constitutes the bulk of the living economic-administrative documents found at the Hittite capital of ?attua. Since the last edition of the corpus, the number of available texts and text fragments has nearly doubled, from 138 to 252. Nevertheless, the corpus remains exceptionally small compared to those of contemporary Bronze Age kingdoms. The texts are furthermore distinguished by an unexpected level of detail, length, and focus on durable goods, such as textiles, metals, and religious objects. Staple products, such as foodstuffs, grain, and livestock, are nearly absent. Volumes 1 + 2 of Studies in Hittite Economic Administration address the unusual features of the preserved Hittite economic-administrative corpus while providing a comprehensive new edition. Based on current archeological and anthropological research, it is suggested that the scope and contents of the corpus are appropriate for an economic administration that was primarily designed to bind together a system of local, defensive agricultural programs through the influence of elites and communities with luxuries and religious endowments. The texts are fully edited with analysis and commentary. An analytical glossary and lexical commentary on the numerous technical terms, rare words, and realia found in the texts are also provided. A case study comparing the wealth of one of the most important texts in corpus to other sources of wealth in the Hittite kingdom is conducted. Finally, the Hittite votive corpus is evaluated from an economic perspective to demonstrate that a significant portion of Hittite religious expenditure was financed by diplomatic income.

欧州海運業における古い仕事と新しい仕事 1850~2000年
Davids, Karel / Schokkenbroek, Joost (eds.), The Transformation of Maritime Professions: Old and New Jobs in European Shipping Industries, 1850-2000. (Palgrave Studies in Economic History) 288 pp. 2023:5 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <700-640>
ISBN 978-3-031-27211-0 hard ¥35,021.- (税込) EUR 159.99

This book deals with the economic impact of technological changes and the rise of passenger shipping on social relations on board and ashore in European shipping industries between c.1850 and 2000. The changes in motive power, communication techniques and positioning technologies and the rise of passenger shipping went together with the creation of new tasks and functions and the marginalization or disappearance of traditional jobs and skills. This book presents case-studies on changes in different maritime professions between the middle of the nineteenth century and the end of the twentieth century, covering the shipping industries of a variety of seafaring countries in Europe. The subjects include changes in maritime labour at large, changes in specific groups of deck, catering or engine room personnel, such as captains, cooks, catering personnel, engineers, or radio-operators. A number of chapters employ a prosopographical or micro-historical approach, while others apply a spatial perspective, analyze business records, materials from professional associations or distil information from large sets of quantitative data. This book will be of interest to academics and students of economic history, maritime and labour history.

Central banks were not always as ubiquitous as they are today. Their functions were circumscribed, their mandates ambiguous, and their allegiances once divided. The inter-war period saw the establishment of twenty-eight new central banks - most in what are now called emerging markets and developing economies. The Emergence of the Modern Central Bank and Global Cooperation provides a new account of their experience, explaining how these new institutions were established and how doctrinal knowledge was transferred. Combining synthetic analysis with national case studies, this book shows how institutional design and monetary practice were shaped by international organizations and leading central banks, which attached conditions to stabilization loans and dispatched 'money doctors.' It highlights how many of these arrangements fell through when central bank independence and the gold standard collapsed.

ISBN 978-3-031-18118-4 hard ¥28,454.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This collective book offers a panorama of the history of tax evasion, tax avoidance and tax havens from the nineteenth century to the present day, based on the latest research in contemporary history. It aims to show that this phenomenon is at the heart of global capitalism, partly as a response of the ruling classes to the rise of progressive taxation, but for other reasons too: notably the development of a powerful tax evasion and avoidance industry in different countries. The book argues that tax competition between states has stimulated the development of tax havens. It discusses the notion of the 'tax haven' and proposes a more rigorous concept - that of the 'tax predator'. Finally, the book sheds light on the socio-political conflicts that have developed around tax evasion and the way in which states have fought against or tolerated the phenomenon.

Hinrichsen, Simon, When Nations Can't Default: A History of War Reparations and Sovereign Debt. (Studies in Macroeconomic History) 200 pp. 2023:12 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <700-648>
ISBN 978-1-00-934392-3 hard ¥21,411.- (税込) GB£ 85.00

War reparations have been large and small, repaid and defaulted on, but the consequences have almost always been significant. Ever since Keynes made his case against German reparations in The Economic Consequences of the Peace, the effects of transfer payments have been hotly debated. When Nations Can't Default tells the history of war reparations and their consequences by combining history, political economy, and open economy macroeconomics. It visits often forgotten episodes and tells the story of how reparations were mostly repaid - and when they were not. Analysing fifteen episodes of war reparations, this book argues that reparations are unlike other sovereign debt because repayment is enforced by military and political force, making it a senior liability of the state.

Drawing on sources such as sales contracts and private letter correspondence, the book investigates elite women's formal and informal roles in decision making processes and their ability to make independent economic choices. In particular, the book stresses the importance of looking beyond the legal regulation of women's economic activities and rather analyses women's own actions, in order to better grasp the complexity of their economic agency.

Rains, Stephanie, Advertising and Consumer Culture in Ireland, 1922-1962: Buy Irish. (Reappraisals in Irish History) 252 pp. 2022:9 (Liverpool U. Pr., UK) <700-650>
ISBN 978-1-80207-058-3 hard ¥23,930.- (税込) GB£ 95.00

This book explores advertising and consumer culture as key aspects of everyday life and national culture in twentieth-century Ireland. It makes a particular argument that the presence of anti-materialist rhetoric in some parts of Irish public life after Independence has obscured the existence of a lively consumer culture throughout the period, as evident in the many advertisements which supported Irish newspapers and magazines, the jingles broadcast on Irish radio, and the neon advertising signs and billboards on Irish streets. The book focuses on the development of the advertising industry itself, and the sophisticated ways in which it worked to associate consumption with national pride. It also considers the advertising of Irish homes and home appliances as an important focus of consumption, and the targeting of Irish women as the principal consumers in those homes, as well as publicity stunts and advertising in public space, and the form and style of commercial broadcasting and sponsored programming from the earliest days of Irish radio. It finishes with an examination of the opposite extremes of consumer abundance displayed in the annual Christmas advertising, as opposed to the consumer culture response to shortages during World War Two.

Economic Policy in Independent India provides an immersive, accessible yet rigorous understanding of the Indian economy through a political economy analysis of economic policies. It provides a birds-eye view of the politics, context, and ideas that shaped major economic policies in independent India and argues that they are the product of crisis, coalitions, and contingency - not necessarily choice. Each chapter focuses on specific political regimes: Colonial Rule, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, liberalisation under coalition governments, the UPA Government, and the NDA Government. The book evaluates how well a government executed its policies based on the economic and political constraints it faced, rather than economic outcomes. Using theories to make sense of the economy, political ideology, historical conditions, and international context, the book's framework provides multiple perspectives and analyses economic policies as an outcome of interactions between dynamics in the economy.

ISBN 978-1-83910-362-9 hard ¥30,228.- (税込) GB£ 120.00

This book offers a novel account of the significant debt crisis which hit many developing countries during the 1980s. It starts with the flawed cycle of bank lending during the 1970s, and then moves from the opening act, in Mexico in 1982, until a solution was found with the 1989 Brady Initiative. The Debt Crisis of the 1980s also articulates closely the economic and financial dimensions alongside the political and multilateral ones. The key relation between debtor countries and the IMF is explored in detail, but the book also documents the tense and often coercive interactions with commercial banks as well as on the continuing resistance to the IMF-led strategy among G7 governments. How debt contracts were restructured during all those years helps understanding how the Brady Initiative worked in practice, and how it prepared the ground for the turn to global markets after 1990. This debt crisis was indeed one of the main incubators of globalisation. This underlines further its unique character in the long-run history of sovereign debts, before and after the 1980s.Remarkably, this book rests on in-depth interviews with the key players. Transcripts are included for the six most important players, including the former heads of the US Federal Reserve and the IMF. Archives from the IMF, the New York Federal Reserve, the Bank of England and commercial banks have also been systematically exploited, often for the first time ever. This narrative and analytical account of one of the biggest debt crises in history is addressed to students and researchers in economics, international history, political economy and socio-legal studies. It will additionally be of value for professional economists and lawyers working on sovereign debts.

An Open Access edition is available on the LUP and OAPEN websites.Across Europe, the early medieval period saw the advent of new ways of cereal farming which fed the growth of towns, markets and populations, but also fuelled wealth disparities and the rise of lordship. These developments have sometimes been referred to as marking an 'agricultural revolution', yet the nature and timing of these critical changes remain subject to intense debate, despite more than a century of research. The papers in this volume demonstrate how the combined application of cutting-edge scientific analyses, along with new theoretical models and challenges to conventional understandings, can reveal trajectories of agricultural development which, while complementary overall, do not indicate a single period of change involving the extension of arable, the introduction of the mouldboard plough, and regular crop rotation. Rather, these phenomena become evident at different times and in different places across England throughout the period, and rarely in an unambiguously 'progressive' fashion.Presenting innovative bioarchaeological research from the ground-breaking Feeding Anglo-Saxon England project, along with fresh insights into ploughing technology, brewing, the nature of agricultural revolutions, and farming practices in Roman Britain and Carolingian Europe, this volume is a critical new contribution to environmental archaeology and medieval studies in England and beyond. Contributors: Amy Bogaard; Hannah Caroe; Neil Faulkner; Emily Forster; Helena Hamerow; Matilda Holmes; Claus Kropp; Lisa Lodwick; Mark McKerracher; Nicolas Schroeder; Elizabeth Stroud; Tom Williamson.

Gehbald, Agnes, A Colonial Book Market: Peruvian Print Culture in the Age of Enlightenment. (Cambridge Latin American Studies) 416 pp. 2023:7 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <700-24>
ISBN 978-1-00-936085-2 hard ¥25,190.- (税込) GB£ 100.00

This volume provides a wholly original social history of books in late colonial Peru. From the second half of the eighteenth century onward, workshops in Lima and transoceanic imports supplied the market with unprecedented quantities of print publications. By tracing the variety of printed commodities that were circulating in the urban sphere, as well as analysing the spatiality of the trade and the materiality of the books themselves, Agnes Gehbald assesses the meaning of print culture in the everyday lives of the viceroyalty. She reveals how books permeated late colonial society on a broad scale and how they figured as objects in the inventories of diverse individuals, both women and men, who, in previous centuries, had been far less likely to possess them. Deeply researched and profound, A Colonial Book Market uncovers how people in Peruvian cities gained access to reading material and participated in the global Enlightenment project.

ISBN 978-1-03-213704-9 hard ¥32,747.- (税込) GB£ 130.00

This book analyzes the roots of one of the main human activities that can be developed in natural and agricultural ecosystems: tourism. Attention to natural and agricultural ecosystems and their conservation has intensified in recent decades, responding to increasing social sensitivity to the environment, as also witnessed by Agenda 2030. The book explores the development of tourism in natural and agricultural ecosystems in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when some of its essential features derived from the practices of exploration, scientific study, business, healing practices, and also a desire for personal growth. This research is intended to open up international scholarly debate and discussion and draw in contributions from all disciplines and geographical areas. In addition, it intends to add an important piece to the mosaic of international literature that has rarely considered the origins of nature and rural tourism in an array of practices not always embodying a stated intent of recreation. This book is based on handwritten documents and travelogues circulating during the period in question. Most of the travel experiences analyzed regard men and women of European descent, but their travels were global, with ecosystems considered on all populated continents. This volume is essential reading for students and scholars alike interested in tourism history and the history of science and travel.

Salem Vasconcelos, Joana, Agrarian History of the Cuban Revolution: Dilemmas of Peripheral Socialism. (Studies in Critical Social Sciences / New Scholarship in Political Economy) 364 pp. 2023:3 (Brill, NE) <698-267>
ISBN 978-90-04-53829-0 hard ¥35,680.- (税込) EUR 163.00

In Agrarian History of the Cuban Revolution, the Brazilian historian Joana Salem Vasconcelos presents in clear language the complicate challenge of overcoming Latin America's underdevelopment condition, even though a revolutionary process. Based on diverse historical sources, she demonstrates why the sugar plantation economic structure in Cuba was not entirely changed by the 1959's Revolution. The author narrates in detail the three dimensions of Cuban agrarian transformation during the decisive 1960s - the land tenure system, the crop regime, and the labour regime -, and its social and political actors. She explains the paths and detours of Cuban agrarian policies, contextualized in a labour-intensive economy that needs desperately to increase productivity and, at the same time, promised widely to emancipate workers from labour exploitation. Cuban agrarian and economic contradictions are well-synthetized with the concept of Peripheral Socialism.

As the fall-out of the Ever Given Suez canal blockage shows, an ancient instrument like General Average (GA) is still highly relevant in redistributing risks and costs in maritime trade. However, bar marine insurance, not much is known about the development of tools of maritime risk management like GA, which redistributes extraordinary costs incurred for the common safety of maritime ventures. This book investigates the development of General Average and other so-called Averages in the Low Countries on the eve of the early modern period, showing how the various varieties of Averages played a significant role in the development of maritime risk management and the broader institutional development in the Low Countries.

Gordon, Cameron, Many Possible Worlds: An Interdisciplinary History of the World Economy Since 1800. 1033 pp. 2023:4 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <698-306>
ISBN 978-981-19-9280-3 hard ¥32,832.- (税込) EUR 149.99 *

This book provides a crosscutting interdisciplinary account of how the disintegrated, global subsistence economy circa 1800 has transformed into a global complex delivering unprecedented levels of material production and consumption. Applying major findings from economics, history/historiography, and sociology (as well as from anthropology, psychology, politics, and environmental studies), the analysis tracks the ways in which changes in 'society' (including social structures, values, and forces) have changed 'individuals' (including conceptions of race, gender, and identity) and vice versa. These changes have simultaneously homogenised and diversified societies and individuals in distinct but sometimes contradictory ways, opening up many possible worlds from an individual and group perspective. Yet, the scale and pace of change has also led to increasing existential challenges. The narrative consists of 30 chapters organized into 10 subsets of 3: one chapter on a relevant core idea; one chapter focused on historical narrative and titled after a representative year; and one chapter on a relevant associated crosscutting theme. Major regional and topical discussions are provided, with special attention paid to business and organisational change and developing world scholarship. Small discussion 'boxes' focusing on illustrative cases and details are presented throughout the book. The last chapter contains over-arching conclusions.

Jiang, George Hong, The Imperial Mode of China: An Analytical Reconstruction of Chinese Economic History. (Palgrave Studies in Economic History) 332 pp. 2023:4 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <698-307>
ISBN 978-3-031-27014-7 hard ¥28,454.- (税込) EUR 129.99

Utilising Marxian, Weberian, and institutionalist approaches, this book proposes a new theoretical framework for understanding the nature of Chinese economic history: the 'imperial mode' of China. The book aims to innovatively apply a cohesive historical materialist framework to the economic evolution of China, while at the same time offering micro-analysis of China's institutions throughout its history.Taking a long-run perspective, from ancient China up until the present, the book aims to show how Chinese economic history can be viewed as a dynamic evolutionary process consisting of various stages. The first part of the book lays out the imperial mode as a mode of production based on China's agricultural economy, with a structure consisting of a central authority, the bureaucratic system, and the peasantry. The second part then chronologically examines the different dynasties through this analytical lens and suggests ways in which China's resistance to institutional changes in the early modern period has had long-lasting consequences for its economic development. The book goes on to show how the imperial mode is able to facilitate the agricultural economy, but did not foster the modern commercial and industrial economy. It integrates modern China into the long wave of economic history, showing how this imperial mode still exerts influence on China's current path of development, as well as introducing a new way of understanding communist China from a historical perspective. This book will have interdisciplinary appeal for researchers and students of economic history, economic development, the history of China, economic sociology, and social history more broadly.

ISBN 978-1-64779-104-9 hard ¥7,953.- (税込) US$ 39.95

Mining in North America has long been criticized for its impact on the natural environment. Mica Jorgenson's The Weight of Gold explores the history of Ontario, Canada's rise to prominence in the gold mining industry, while detailing a series of environmental crises related to extraction activities. In Ontario in 1909, the discovery of exceptionally rich hard rock gold deposits in the Abitibi region in the north precipitated industrial development modeled on precedents in Australia, South Africa, and the United States. By the late 1920s, Ontario's mines had reached their maturity, and in 1928, Minister of Mines Charles McRae called Canada "the mineral treasure house to [the] world."Mining companies increasingly depended upon their ability to redistribute the burdens of mining onto surrounding communities-a strategy they continue to use today-both at home and abroad. Jorgenson connects Canadian gold mining to its international context, revealing that Ontario's gold mines informed extractive knowledge which would go on to shape Canada's mining industry over the next century.

ISBN 978-0-19-887515-4 hard ¥20,907.- (税込) GB£ 83.00

This book examines the forms of estate management in the countryside of Florence and Lucca between the eleventh and the middle of the thirteenth centuries. It argues that their change reflects wider transformations of medieval economic patterns, and specifically the surge in overall demand that occurred in the decades bridging the twelfth and the thirteenth centuries. The reasons for a comparison between the Florentine and the Lucchese countryside lie in the alleged differences of their historical evolution-as it has been outlined by scholars so far. The so-called manorial system (sistema curtense) is believed to have ceased to exist in the Lucchesia around the beginning of the tenth century, whereas in the Fiorentino its disappearance can be dated to the early thirteenth century. Similarly, the Florentine countryside is generally regarded as the birthplace of a particular type of sharecropping regime, the mezzadria poderale, which spread over much of central Italy during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and would later become an essential component of Italian agrarian identity. On the contrary, the mezzadria poderale is thought to have never developed at any point in the history of medieval and early modern Lucchesia-and this was indeed the case with all the coastal areas of Tuscany. The book endeavours to examine the characteristics of estate management in the central Middle Ages in their own right; that is to say, by detaching those transformations from any teleological view, and by placing them within the economic and sociopolitical context of the period 1000-1250.

ISBN 978-1-03-227799-8 hard ¥32,747.- (税込) GB£ 130.00

Drawing on modern economic theory, this book provides new insights into the economic development of ancient economies and the sustainability of their development. The book pays particular attention to the economics of hunting and gathering societies and their diversity. New ideas are presented about theories of the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture, including Childe's theory of this development. The Agricultural Revolution was a major contributor to economic development because in most cases, it generated an economic surplus. However, as shown, income inequality was a necessary condition for the use of this surplus to promote economic development and to avoid the Malthusian population trap. This inequality was evident in the successful operation of the palatial economies of the Minoan and Mycenaean states. Nevertheless, some post-agricultural economies proved to be unsustainable, and they 'mysteriously' disappeared. This happened in the case of the Silesian Unetice culture and population. Economic and ecological reasons for this are suggested. The nature of economic development altered with increased trade, the use of barter, and subsequently the supply of money to facilitate this trade. These developments are examined in the context of the palatial economies of Mesopotamia and Egypt. Elsewhere, multinational business made a substantial contribution to the economic growth of Phoenicia, where international trade was not determined by its natural resource endowments. Thus, Phoenician economic exchange and development provides a different set of insights. The book makes an important contribution to the understanding of the evolution of human societies and will therefore be of interdisciplinary interest including economists (especially economic historians), anthropologists and sociologists, some archaeologists, and historians.

Pachinko parlors offer a form of gambling unique to Japan located near train stations, in the suburbs and in other everyday living spaces. Before World War II, pachinko was born as a game for both children and adults to enjoy at outdoor festivals. From its humble origins, it has grown dramatically to become a huge industry with a market size of 30 trillion yen per year. However, the trajectory of this growth has been marked by a series of difficulties: the short-lived popularity of pachinko machines superseded by new, more exciting models; the intense competition between parlors for customers; the regulations imposed by authorities trying to curb machines' speculative element; issues related to patent infringements; and organized crime that at times loomed over the money exchange system. How did the stakeholders in the pachinko business adapt to the regulations and face challenges as they sought the stability and sustainability of their industry? How did pachinko develop from a peripheral economy to become a major industry? Ethnic minority Koreans in Japan, who arrived during the Korean colonial era, are deeply involved in the economic activities of the pachinko industry - how should we understand their involvement in the growth of this huge market?Drawing on a vast amount of primary and secondary resources from the 1950s to the 1990s, this book sheds new light on the circumstances behind the emergence of the pachinko industry as a huge market force in Japan.
